Si collega il sostegno metallico con un polo di una macchina elettrostatica mentre l'altro è messo a terra. Si vedrà la linguetta a forma di </span><span style="font-family: Century Gothic,sans-serif;"><em>esse</em></span><span style="font-family: Century Gothic,sans-serif;">, posta in bilico sull'ago terminale del sostegno, ruotare rapidamente in senso opposto alla punta. Poiché l'aria è conduttrice in quanto contiene ioni positivi e negativi liberi, il fenomeno si spiega pensando che gli ioni dello stesso segno con cui è elettrizzata la punta sono da questa respinti e quindi la respingono a loro volta per il principio di azione e reazione.</span></p>
